I met a guy yesterday that I’ll call Nick. Nick has biceps that look like the Alps. The mountainous peaks on either arm, no doubt, could lift a truck. Nick’s right arm is completely unblemished, but the left one is covered from top to bottom with tattoos that appear to be tiger markings or very menacing teeth. The left arm décor is part of Nick’s armor – a collage of protective images that extend over his chest, where, he said, he has a tattooed shield covering his heart. Super heroes, he said, will one day cover the other unblemished arm. What Nick did not say is why he needs such an elaborate fortress of muscle and ink, but he provided a few clues – a hasty reference to a broken heart and a quick rendition of the police officer and marine he once was.
